The Master Bedroom Comes Back Downstairs

by Elizabeth on August 31st, 2007

bed.jpgAccording to the San Jose Mercury News, More baby boomers are tired of trudging upstairs to hit the sack:

First-floor master bedrooms are enjoying a resurgence after falling in and out of favor over the years.

The National Association of Home Builders says more than 40 percent of new homes have master suites downstairs, a 15 percent increase over a decade ago. This time - no surprise here - baby boomers with bad knees and creaky backs are being credited with increasing demand.

Additionally:

“The 1980s was when the baby-boom generation was having their children and wanted to be (sleeping) close by,” said Raleigh residential designer Carl Skinner. “Now they’re older and want to be away from them - and the bedrooms are coming downstairs.”

Sometimes there’s more than one. Some homeowners are asking for two master bedrooms - one for them and one for a parent or in-law.

Our master bedroom is upstairs, and, as much as I get tired of going up and down the stairs, I don’t think at this point we’d move downstairs. First, we still have young kids at home, and, secondly, I like having the guest room on the first floor, away from the hustle and bustle of our rooms.

As for the second master bedroom, I never really thought about it, but, I’m thinking that might not be an option for most people, but, it could be useful.

I know I’m tired of trudging upstairs to hit the sack.
I’m thinking of a one bedroom flat.
    Yup, or a hotel.
    They clean things in hotels.
    Must. Win. Lottery.
