Tangled Neuron Creates a Map of Recommended Alzheimer’s Doctors
Go over to the Tangled Neuron and help create a map of recommended Alzheimers doctors if you have any experience in this area.
Of course, there are additional things to consider when selecting a physician, but, personal recommendation ranks right up there for me.

I am a contributor to this map of recommended doctors. A good Alzheimer’s doctor must be, first a neurologist specializing in dementia diagnosis. He/she also must work closely with a neuropsychologist and a number of technologists expert in various brain scanning techniques.
But that is only the beginning. A recommendable dementia doctor also understands that the person with dementia is still a human being with a vital interest in his or her own wellbeing. The doctor can explain cognitive deficits to the patient and caregiver simply enough and often enough for them to have a sense of what is happening.
An exceptional diagnostician is also thoughtful enough to give a written copy of the findings to the person with dementia and the care-partner. He or she realizes that one is made numb by the diagnosis, and one needs time and many re-readings to fully understand what was found.
A really REALLY exceptional specialist always remembers to speak to the patient, and let the caregiver listen in and ask questions as they arise. This is simply a fundamental respect for the humanity of the patient. At the Dementia Advocacy and Support Network International, we advise patients whose doctors speak only to their care-partner to find another doctor.
Patients should be the captains of their own team of specialists and carers. They should assemble their team and have their team work for them for as long as possible. This is basic empowerment of the patient to have self-determination for as long as is desired!
I was very fortunate to have found such an exemplary doctor in Dr. John Morris of the Memory and Diagnostic Clinic at Washington University in St. Louis.
