Surrogate wife, or, just the owner of a big cooler?

by Elizabeth on May 3rd, 2007

fridgec.gifMy dad called me the other night to tell me his refrigerator wasn’t working. He didn’t really ask me to do anything, but, I said I’d be there in a few minutes.

I didn’t think much about it at first, as I packed up a cooler with some ice. But, then I thought about it a little more deeply as I am wont to do, and, wondered why he called me.

It’s not that I didn’t want to give him a hand, I’m just not sure what he wanted from me, since he was essentially calling me to inform me.

What would he have done before my mother died?

Even in her final days, she would have told him to take the stuff out, go get a cooler, and, put some ice in it, and, try to figure out what was wrong, and, that’s what he would have done.

So, am I taking the place of my mother for these little domestic irritants?

I quickly dismissed my thoughts as angsty hyperanalysis, and, didn’t give it another thought until 2 more people asked me the same question.

Even if it’s true, it’s not bad, just sort of a new one for me.

My excuse for calling my dad in situations like that is “what do I do? Maybe if I call dad he can organize this crisis” hehehe

When we went to my mother’s for dinner recently, my wife commented that my mother now always seems to make roast beef or some similar other large roast type thing when we come to dinner. Not that it is a bad thing, but it was just odd. Coincidence?

As it turned out no, she had intentionally planned dinners this way, because she can not (or will not) figure out how to use the slicing machine. That was dad’s job. And now apparently it is mine. And if I never go there again… well… she just won’t have Roast Beef any longer.
