Senior Citizen’s Centers
Senior Citizen’s Centers aren’t just bastions of bingo and afghans anymore.
The centers are trying to change to keep pace with the new needs of the older generation and often include amenities such as cafes, fitness centers and classrooms.
According to the New York Times, those centers that don’t adapt may not make it:
Tomorrow is a far bigger worry. Experts predict that baby boomers will not walk in the door of outdated centers, which are often in church basements, reminiscent of high school cafeterias before the advent of food courts, with few activities besides bingo and transportation to the mall.
“If they don’t innovate,” said John A. Krout, director of the gerontology institute at Ithaca College, “they will die.
In my neighborhood, there’s a senior citizen’s center that shares space with the YMCA. It’s a great set-up and they offer a lot of activities.
I’m glad things like this are around, but I wonder if we’re losing sight of the elderly who aren’t among the “young-old”? While I’m glad that the concept of aging is changing, not every senior lives the fabulous, active life that is so prevalent in the media today.
Are the more frail, “stereotypical” being left out?

I know what you are saying, and it is worth thinking about so that (like everything else these days it doesn’t get “out of hand”) but I think the point is to EXPAND the programs, not simply change them to the new “active senior” to the detriment of the others.
At least I hope so.

[…] Though I haven’t read it, it seems timely what with all the current talk in the media about “aging gracefully”, and the “young old”. […]

Iam one of the adviser of the senior citizens here at the bgy.ugong valenzuela city;philippines. And i could see the simple request of the people but because of lack of budgets and concerns they do not emphasized their needs. Like medicines, food and transport allowance.I hope that anyone there in the highest position could look back to their needs.I really want to be an instrument to give them much importance in our society. Thanks and Godbless.
