Long distance caregivers turn to care managers
I’m very fortunate that I’ve lived in the same city as my parents, but, not everyone does, and, it can complicate the issue of caring for aging parents, and, more and more people are in that situation every day.
There’s even an organization, Caring From a Distance (CFAD) that serves the needs of this group.
While there are many industries cropping up that have to do with our aging population, not all of them are necessarily useful. However, the concept of care managers seems like a good one for long distance caregivers.
While care coordinators can very in credentials and expertise, the National Association of Professional Geriatric Care Managers is working to standardize the profession.
The cost of a care manager may be prohibitive for many families, but, it’s good to see recognition that many people are caring from aging parents from a distance, and, they need help.

There truly are different expertise in Geriatric Care Managers. In Minnesota I work with one that specializes in mental health (dimentia and depression) and another that specializes in helping seniors stay home as long as they are able to/want to. Great post!
