Happy birthday, Hula Hoop
Just like the rest of us, our toys are getting older, too.
I’m not quite old enough to remember the height of the Hula Hoop fad, but I did have one in the seventies. I think it was a light red color. I was really good at it, too.
However, I’ve always wondered why I can’t seem to do it anymore, and was a little distressed when I may have discovered the reason:
General rule of thumb: The bigger you are, the bigger the hoop should be. Larger hoops will rotate slower, making getting started easier.
You can still find them in the store, but they also live on virtually through the Nintendo Wii Fit. I’ve never even seen a Nintendo Wii (shocking, I know) much less the Wii Fit, since I am Nintendo deprived.
Wait, I do still have my Nintendo from a few years ago, but I will own a Wii someday when I grow up. After all, I need to practice up for when I have to play Wii in the retirement home.

I too, am Nintendo deprived. All my hula-hooping has to be the real thing. Unfortunately I stink at it - even with a large hoop. And my mom eyes my attempts critically, “You know, I used to be a CHAMPION hula-hooper when I was younger.”
I assume by “younger” she doesn’t mean 44!

I have a Nintendo Wii, which I love, but waited too long to get the Fit, so I must meantime make do with my real Hula Hoop. It is rather generously sized, and I can actually keep it going for 10 minutes or more at a time!

Hi, Elizabeth. My sister and I were just remembering the time we were on a trip (I think I was about 9 and she was 7) and our parents bought us a hula hoop to keep us entertained. We spent hours in a hotel room trying to figure out the thing.
Toys like this give us great times and happy memories. Thanks for the post!
