Estate planning

by Elizabeth on March 10th, 2007

My uncle passed away peacefully early yesterday morning, thank you for your kind words. We arrived safely, and, were able to spend the evening with him at the hospital.

Today has been spent going through his things, and, trying to get a clue about the estate, since my father is the executor, and, things are not in the same order he was told they would be, and, we have to leave tomorrow.

I have but one thing to say at this point:

Stop reading blogs, and, go get your estate in order. Right now.

This has been the biggest scavenger hunt. Seriously, no matter how old you are, get a will, tell someone where it is, and, make a list of all your assets, and, account numbers.

Oh, and, don’t forget, after you die, your family will be going through everything you own. Your family will thank you for reducing your possessions accordingly.

It took months and we literally had to look through every piece of paper (where we found money and other valuables), every piece of underwear (where we found a diamond ring) and the attic (which reeked with cat and rat). As we worked, we all vowed to get our homes in order. Of course, I haven’t yet, but I’m sure more organized than i was…

Rough draft your obituary notice so family isn’t left bickering over what you would want included.

I’m sorry about your Uncle. Your father has had a very hard year.
