I have been following your blog and am hooked as I have reason to believe that in the near future I will be the sole caregiver of my aging mom.
Question…
what if no “official” diagnosis of dementia has been given? My mom has begun “forgetting” names of people and things. This happens to everyone as we age but last week she began saying things that really scared me, she spoke of actually going to a place that does not exist other than in a fictional book and then went on to tell a tale of how my grandmother died (including wrong death date). Including telling me that the last day I spoke to my grandmother, she had already been dead for a day, even though my grandmother tried to speak to me, my brother and my dad on our last meeting in the nursing home.
What does a person do if they are the sole family left to possibly care for the aging parent? What if the parent is so defensive and refuses any conversation about future care, living arrangements and the other needed conversations?
The prospect of dealing with my moms obstinance is very freightening in light of the fact that if its this bad already and no real health issues are in play , it will only get worse.
