Cleaning expired items from parents’ house
Pat, at Sometimes I Feel Like a Piece of Bologna, has a great post about cleaning up and cleaning out things at an elderly parents house.
She brings up an especially good point about expired foods and medicines.
When I was at my parents house before my mother died, I had a lot of time to clean things because I’d be there for huge amounts of time since my mother couldn’t be alone.
I got bored one day and got into the pantry. I hadn’t really studied it until that day, but my word, was there some stuff in there.
It’s a very small closet, and I got 3 garbage bags of stuff to throw away out of there. There were actually things in there from when I was a kid.
I was glad I had gotten in there because it wouldn’t have been impossible for my dad to have eaten something from the early nineties thinking that if it was in the pantry, it must be OK.

I helped clean out my sister’s father-in-law’s place. We found things like food coloring, spices and herbs from the 1950s.
