The “Sandwich” generation

My father is apparently trying to relieve me of my Sandwich Generation status.
Seems he got a plate full of small sandwiches to take home from a reception at work.
He’s been enjoying them for several days, right from their little plate on the kitchen counter.
Please note that I didn’t say refrigerator anywhere in that previous […]

Back to my dad

A while back (no pun intended, but, it made me laugh, anyway) I told you that my dad’s back problems were getting worse.
Well, today, he reports that he has nearly cured himself.
All it took was changing his sleeping position from his side to his back (I can hear all the physical therapists recoil in […]

My dad’s back update

My dad saw the doctor about his back.
He got a steroid shot, and, the OK to keep riding his bike (dangit).
He’s having sciatic pain, and, has reported one foot not working right, that’s the part that’s bothering me. I’m worried he’s going to fall.
But, he seemed no worse for the wear this morning at […]

Tour de I Don’t Want to Know

My father has decided to take up riding his bike again.
My father, age 75, the same one who is about a year out of a 2 level lumbar laminectomy (back surgery).
Why yes, he’s also the one who takes blood thinner, has had 2 heart attacks, lives alone, and, became intimately acquainted with a ditch […]

Flower child

For those of you who are as fascinated by my father’s new found decorating career as I am:
My phone rings at work today:
My dad: “Elizabeth? I’m going back to the craft place to get another sunflower.”
Me: “OK”.
My dad: “Yeah, the arrangement is just missing something, there’s an empty spot. I don’t know if I should […]

Things I never thought I’d hear my dad say: Part the 3,273rd

We cooked out yesterday for my daughter’s and my dad’s birthday, and, after we ate, my dad Said, “Hey, can we go to Michaels? I need to get some silk flowers.”
It’s especially funny, because, many moons ago, I lived out of town, near some outlet malls. My parents would often come to visit me over […]

The family visit

It just occurred to me that I never told you how the visit went with my dad’s niece, and, her family.
As you may recall, our slightly anti-social hero (my father) had a brother (my uncle) who died back in March. My uncle had three daughters (my dad’s nieces, my cousins) who we didn’t know very […]

I’ll take, “Things I Never Thought I’d Hear My Dad Say” for, $500, Alex.

Long time readers will remember that I’ve never really grown used to my dad calling me for reasons other than, well, someone’s death.
Just when I think I’ve about gotten past that, the phone will ring, I’ll answer it, and, I’ll clench everything when I hear his voice, especially during the work day.
Yesterday?
*ring*
Me: “Hello?”
My dad: “Elizabeth?”
*his […]

My dad. The host with the…something…I’m sure he has something.

I’ve told you that my dad’s niece, and, her family are coming to visit this weekend, and, how my dad isn’t all that into it, especially since it means house guests for him.
I’m wondering if he wishes he had a wife to take care of all this socializing stuff.
He’s kind of on his […]
