Caregiver Resources
The Informed Patient column in yesterday’s Wall Street Journal was about caregivers.
More Resources Help Caregivers Help Themselves by Laura Landro looks at the evidence that caregivers can cope better when they receive counseling sessions, in-home skills training, support groups, and assistance juggling care responsibilities, and, how the pressure can mount during the holidays.
What is interesting is that there are groups lobbying for funding for health care systems to provide a formal assessment of caregivers needs:
A number of lobbying efforts are under way to secure more funding from the federal government for programs to help caregivers, and some experts are calling for formal assessment programs that could be used by health-care organizations to determine what kind of support caregivers may need.
I think that anything that brings attention to the concerns of the caregiver is a good thing. Often people, including health care professionals, have no idea what it takes to take care of the sick or elderly at home, and, it’s time more people became aware of their needs in order to provide real, meaningful assistance.

I know right. You don’t know what it takes to be a caregiver. Grandfather’s wife slipped into the role and way overdid it lifting him and waiting on him - costing her her own health. She had no resources or support. She didn’t tell anyone.
