Car makers keep aging drivers in mind with new designs
Car makers are taking our aging population into account as they design new cars.
Nissan designers are experiencing first hand how the physical changes of aging affect drivers by using an aging suit:
Carmaker Nissan Motor is using a specialized driver’s suit and goggles to simulate the bad balance, stiff joints, weaker eyesight and extra 11 pounds (5 kilograms) that may accompany senior citizenry.
Associate chief designer Etsuhiro Watanabe says the suit’s weight and constriction help in determining functionality and accessibility within cars by putting young designers not only in the minds of the mobility-challenged, but also in their bodies.
Attention to details like these could make the difference for an older person to drive and remain independent.
