Are Baby Boomers that different from past generations?
Mark, at the The Obligation of Enlightenment, has a interesting post about Baby Boomers being the Sandwich Generation.
He maintains that the obligations of caring for children and aging parents are simply what you do as a part of being in a family:
Every generation spends a portion of their lives sandwiched between generations. It used to be labeled “family.” Families took care of the pressing issues concerning their passings and their presentings. These were our families. They weren’t extensions. And there weren’t pretensions that our parents were intrusions.
I think he’s right. As a whole, we need to get over feeling like our situations are unique.
It doesn’t mean that our situations aren’t difficult, and, that we can’t seek support, but, we do need to remember that every generation has done this before us.
However, I do think that there are more extreme cases these days since technology has advanced, and, people are living much, much longer. Also, I think more people need to work outside the home than in generations past, and, it can create different, not necessarily worse, logistical difficulties, and, dilemmas.
