Campaigning to the Sandwich Generation

In Australia, it seems that the Sandwich Generation is becoming a recognized voting demographic, and, the candidates are actively seeking their votes:
(Prime Minister) Mr Howard cited child care and flexibility in the workplace as two areas where the Government could help this constituency.

Looks like these needs know no country boundaries.

I’d say he’s doing well at the moment

I called my dad this morning, and, he wasn’t home.
If you haven’t figured it out yet, I’m a bit of a worrier. It’s just what I do.
Now, logically, I knew he was out doing something, and, there was nothing wrong, but, I continued to fret, anyway. Yes, he has finally learned to carry his cell […]

More on helping with aging parents’ finances

The Naperville Sun has a good article, Boomers should be gentle in aiding aging parents with estate plans.
I know I talk about this topic a lot, but, I cannot tell you how much I was just like you: raising young children, going to work, and going about my suburban existence, and, one day woke up […]

A sudden loss

I read a tragic story, and, though I don’t know this family, I think they could use our good thoughts, and, prayers.
Magazine Man, of Somewhere on the Masthead, has a newborn baby at home, and, unbelievably, both of his parents were killed in a car wreck on the way to visit the family.
I cannot […]

The Way We Age Now

There’s a wonderful article in the New Yorker, The Way We Age Now.
It discusses the different theories of aging: a genetic based process versus the wear and tear model, and, how medicine looks at them, and, the importance of geriatric specialists in helping older people preserve what they have:
Good medical care can influence which direction […]

Grandparents raising the children of soldiers

Research has shown us that there are many grandparents, who, for whatever reason, are raising young grandchildren. Though it can be rewarding, this scenario can also be very stressful, particularly financially.
There are many grandparents caring for the children of deployed soldiers, but, if the unthinkable happened, and, the parent is killed in action, did you […]

Deep thoughts

One of my mother’s friends took me out to lunch yesterday. They have all been very good to me, but, one thing I’ve noticed is that the topic of my mother is coming up less frequently when we are together.
Of course, if I wanted to talk about something related to her, they would. However, the […]

The return of the heirlooms

My dad heard from his step-mother’s family today.
It looks like she left instructions, afterall, for my father to get back the family heirlooms. I wish my uncle had lived long enough to know this, as some of these items were very, very important to him, and, he worked many years to try to get […]
